New Zealand Rugby Museum

336 Main Street, Palmerston North
Takaro, Manawatu
Formerly a small museum for the lover of Rugby with little sign of Saatchis or Addidas and the commercialism of the modern game. A deservedly popular museum for those interested in Rugby stories.

The Rugby Museum has now moved to become part of Te Manawa at the same site. Part of the collection features in an exhibition about Rugby and War to be shown at Te Manawa from August to November 2015 and then tour New Zealand until 2019.

The audio guide relates to the museum before it moved.

Down in dear old Palmy, there’s a place that you must see
It’s the N Z Rugby Museum, on show for you and me
Beginning with small displays, at the PDC
With the first of these set up in the late 60’s
Memorabilia, there is a plenty, of rugby days gone by
Starting out when it was only 1 point for a try
Doc Spurdle and John Sinclair, together began it all
First one was in Grey Street, soon became too small
It moved next to The Showgrounds, now known as FMG
With a lot more on display, for all the folks to see
August 2011, the next great move took place
To Te Manawa on Main Street, where our history you can trace
Sir Brian is our patron, one of N Z’s rugby greats
A natural-born leader, always helpful to his mates
Now Clive is the big boss, the chairman of the board
One day he might be knighted and get whacked with a sword
Neil is still the treasurer, a bean counter is he
Keeps the books safe and sound, knows the money tree
Catherine is artistic, makes up the displays
She’s so full of new ideas, in so many ways
Stephen ‘The Director’ likes to bike and run
When he’s not here working, it’s his idea of fun
Trish is the Secretary, keeps us all in line
Makes up the roster, sees we keep our time
Bob’s been here for ages, he knows his way around
Without his years of help, it might have fallen down
The committee are energetic, good people tried and true
They make up all the rules, tell us what to do
There are so many volunteers, giving up their days
Helping where they can, in so many ways
Always doing their best, and getting the job done
Making the museum, in our country, number one.
