Napier St Town Houses

Freemans Bay
Freemans Bay, Auckland
A bit of a social landmark for New Zealand Architecture.
The reason these 1983 townhouses by architect Marshall Cook are of note is they are seen by some as New Zealand's first acknowledgement of the need to slow up on our use of urban land. Older townhouses apartments and units were rather purpose built for economy. These are, rather stylishly, with a touch of post modern and Italian influences, designed in an attempt to demonstrate that a family can exist in a space other than the traditional quarter acre.
The colourways which may have faded and changed over the years, were initially described as 'gelato.'
