Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and Len Lye Archive

Queen Street
New Plymouth, Taranaki
An important regional contemporary art museum, home of the Len Lye archive. The museum focuses on collecting work by emerging and mid-career New Zealand artists and artists from the Pacific Rim.

Free admission.

Len Lye gifted his collection and archive to be housed at the Govett-Brewster. Patterson Architects designed a Len Lye Centre with a spectacular stainless steel façade. It sits immediately adjacent to the existing building. This is New Zealand’s first art museum dedicated to a single artist.

In the words of Len Lye himself, ‘Great Art goes 50/50 with Great Architechture.’ No-one knows if he envisioned the fantastic 2015 Len Lye Centre when he said this, but his words have become prophetic as his collection sits tight inside the cutting edge Len Lye Centre.

NZPlaces will report more on this, with the centre having attracted 5000 visitors in it's first month, and expected to attract domestic tourists and international visitors in big numbers in coming years.
