A statue of a Huntaway, a sheep-herding dog takes pride of place on the State Highway in Hunterville. A New Zealand bred dog, the Huntaway uses its voice to drive the sheep.

The small town of Hunterville (pop 500) makes passing travelers on SH1 welcome with an ice-cream parlour, a coffee shop, a café/restaurant and a camping ground.

The Edwardian Baroque former post office, built in 1904 when the Government Architect was John Campbell is a feature of the main street.
