Owae Marae, Waitara

Owae is on the north bank of the Waitara River in Waitara
Waitara East, Taranaki
Also known as Manukorihi, this is one of Taranaki’s most important marae. The large carved meeting houses, Te Ikaroa a Maui, was opened in 1936. Beside it stands a statue of Sir Maui Pomare, an important twentieth century Maori leader. Among the other buildings on the marae is an 1886 whare tipuna (ancestral house).
