Hayes Engineering Works and the Ida Valley

Ida Valley, Omakau Road, Oturehua
Oturehua, Otago
A well preserved example of a rural engineering works that provided a range of products for farmers. Some of the buildings are sun-dried brick, a peculiarity to Central Otago and its dry climate. The Hayes Chain Grab Wire Strainer is now sold around the world.

Eben Ernest Hayes emigrated to New Zealand from Warwickshire in 1881 at the age of 31. His many innovations were the foundation of a successful engineering enterprise at this remote Central Otago site.

Poet Brian Turner whose work is heavily influenced by his environment lives in the Ida Valley.
